FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
WHAT DO YOU LEARN IN YOUR MUSIC LESSONS?
That question is often asked by prospective students. Our teachers make it a priority to get to know you on a personal level and to become familiar with your personal musical needs and goals.
We do not treat every student the same in terms of what and how we teach.
A seven year old having their first guitar lesson will have very different needs than a fifty seven year old taking up piano for the 2nd time after having had lessons as a child.
The main reason to choose Norman Music Institute as your music lesson provider, is that we are sensitive to the fact that every student is an individual.
If you enroll here for lessons, we will work with you to make a plan that will fit your needs and musical preferences. At the first lesson your teacher will ask you about your favorite type of music, and set goals to help accomplish whatever musical aspirations you have for yourself or your child.
WHAT STYLES OF MUSIC DO YOU TEACH?
We teach all styles from rock, pop, jazz, country, blues and classical.
ARE YOUR INSTRUCTORS QUALIFIED?
Our teachers have received their education from institutions such as Oklahoma University, Oklahoma City University, Musicians Institute, and many other colleges and universities around the country.
GUITAR LESSONS
Our guitar teachers teach rock, blues, metal, country and classical guitar lessons on electric and acoustic guitars. Beginner students can expect to work on chords, simple songs and melodies, sight reading and theory. We balance musicianship and fun by making sure that each lesson you are challenged with a new technical or theory concept, but always end with something fun such as your favorite riff or song. We use guitar method books written by Gregg Standridge (master's degree in guitar performance) to accomplish this and encourage students to bring CDs or their phone/iPod to their lesson to learn their favorite tunes.
BASS LESSONS
Our bass teachers teach rock, blues, metal, country and classical bass lessons on electric and acoustic bass. Beginner students can expect to work on chords, simple songs and melodies, sight reading and theory. We balance musicianship and fun by making sure that each lesson you are challenged with a new technical or theory concept, but always end with something fun such as your favorite riff or song.
PIANO LESSONS
Our piano teachers teach a variety of styles from classical to popular music. Whether you want to learn Bach or Alicia Keys, our teachers are happy to help you become the pianist you want to be. Our piano faculty will show you the fundamentals of sight reading, technique and theory, but they will also incorporate your favorite songs into your lessons. You do not have to have a piano at home to take lessons. A simple full size electronic keyboard will suffice for the first 6 months. Our piano teachers have warm personalities and enjoy sharing their love for the piano with you.
DRUM LESSONS
We have one of the most professional drum lesson rooms in Norman, with state of the art sound proofing. Our drum instructors teach rock, metal, jazz, funk, blues and many other styles. Drum language can be complex and our instructors will challenge any drummer with a wide variety of technical exercises designed to improve your speed and comfort. All drummers bring in their favorite drum parts to learn in their lessons and theory is encouraged. We have many drum students who play in local bands be it in rock clubs or their local churches. You do not have to purchase a drum kit to take lessons. Students use our drum set at their lessons and do not have to bring anything except their drum sticks and a notebook.
VOICE LESSONS
Our voice teachers primarily focus on popular music. If you have always wanted to be a better rock, pop, country, jazz, gospel or R&B singer, then we have the right voice teachers for you. Voice students spend time each week doing physical exercises to improve their vocal range, ear training, breath control, vibrato, tone production, enunciation and more. All voice students set goals with their teacher to work on sounding like their favorite recording artists, or if they prefer, to develop their own unique voice. We not only teach singers, but also local TV and radio personalities who want to enhance their speaking voices.
BANJO LESSONS
Our teachers will help you learn the basic banjo rolls and chords, as well as how to read banjo tablature. All styles of banjo music are available. We teach both four-string and five-string banjo.
BRASS LESSONS
Our teachers teach every common member of the brass family: Trumpet, French Horn, Trombone, Baritone and Tuba. Students will learn to approach the instrument with a relaxed yet focused mind and body. All aspects of being a brass musician are discussed, from breathing and posture to tone production and technique. Lessons will also include an emphasis on music theory and aural skills (listening) to help further enrich the journey to becoming an outstanding musician. Practice techniques are a main focus. Listening examples and materials may be provided depending on each individual. All styles of music may be explored and lessons will be tailored to what the student finds interesting and fun.
HARMONICA LESSONS
Harmonica lessons are designed for beginning as well as advanced students. Our teachers can help each student with instruction covering techniques, styles and genres. Our teachers have been playing harmonics since the late 1950's, and are very happy to share any and all of their knowledge with students.
SONGWRITING LESSONS
Have you always wanted to write a song, but haven't known how? Do you have trouble writing lyrics? Or trouble writing melodies? Or have you written troves of songs, and just want to fine tune your writing or get out of a songwriting rut? Teaching songwriting ("coaching" might be a better word) is a process that is unique with each student. Our teachers have helped students to write songs in all kinds of styles, including pop, country, metal, hip hop, jazz and musical theater. Whatever your level of experience, and whatever your level of ability, our teachers can help you learn the techniques to create the kinds of songs you want to write.
STRINGS LESSONS
Our teachers have experience with all ages and levels of string students, and have been teaching private lessons for over six years. Lessons cover mainly classical music using several different method books, including Suzuki and Essential Elements. Our teachers follow the traditional style and evaluate each student's strengths and weaknesses in learning to tailor lesson plans for the individual. String lessons include learning the standard string repertoire, scales, etudes, and music theory.
